A Guest Blog: One Year of Rosmini Hybrid Education Hub
A year ago, Rosmini Hybrid Education Hub was little more than an idea shaped by late-night conversations, shared curiosity and a growing conviction that education needed to evolve. It began as a vision held – and relentlessly driven – by my amazing partner, Jacinda Butterworth, whose belief in doing education differently has made everything that followed possible.
From the very beginning, my role has simply been to support, champion and help bring that vision to life…..
Building something that matters
Supporting the set-up of Rosmini Hybrid Education Hub has been both energising and humbling. While the concept and educational philosophy were Jacinda’s, building it together has been a shared journey… one that has demanded trust, resilience and a willingness to take risks in pursuit of something better.
From the outset, the goal was clear: to create a flexible, inclusive learning environment that bridges traditional and modern approaches to secondary education. We wanted a space where students could succeed academically while also developing independence, creativity and resilience; a place where they could genuinely thrive, not just “get through” school.
What I didn’t fully anticipate was how far the “hybrid” idea would stretch beyond the timetable. It isn’t only about blending in-person and online learning. It’s about blending ideas, perspectives, backgrounds, expectations and ambitions. Every student, parent and educator who has engaged with the Hub over this first year has helped shape it into something richer, deeper and more human than any original blueprint on paper.
Lessons from the retirement living sector
Alongside supporting Rosmini, my main professional focus continues to be in the retirement living sector. On the surface, it might seem like a completely different world: one centred on later life, the other on early and formative years. But the parallels have been striking.
In retirement living, success rests on understanding people as individuals – recognising their histories, preferences, needs and aspirations. It is about creating environments that support independence while providing the right level of care, reassurance and community. In many ways, Rosmini is built on the same principles.
Each learner arrives with their own story, strengths and challenges. Just as in retirement communities, a one-size-fits-all model simply does not work. At Rosmini, the emphasis is on personalisation, dignity and empowerment – honouring who each young person is, rather than trying to press them into a narrow mould of who they “should” be.
Another clear crossover is the importance of community. In retirement living, combating isolation and building meaningful connection is critical to wellbeing. In education, the same is true. Learning is not just an academic exercise; it is a social, emotional and relational experience. Over the past year, watching friendships form, collaborations grow and students’ confidence slowly build has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.
Adapting, listening, growing
If there is one lesson that links both sectors, it is this: listening is everything. The most effective environments, whether designed for retirees or teenagers, are the ones that evolve in response to real feedback, not assumptions.
This first year at Rosmini has not been without its challenges. We have had to adjust systems, rethink assumptions and respond quickly to changing needs. There have been moments of uncertainty and steep learning curves. But those moments have been invaluable. They have pushed us to refine what we do, clarify what we stand for and stay rooted in our core mission: to provide an educational pathway where students can genuinely thrive.
Looking ahead
Reaching the one-year milestone feels significant, but it is also just the beginning. The education landscape is shifting fast, and we know we must continue to adapt with it. Our ambition is not merely to keep up with change, but to contribute to it – thoughtfully, responsibly and always with a clear focus on the young people and families we serve.
Balancing my ongoing work in retirement living with supporting Rosmini has left me with a simple, grounding truth: at every stage of life, people want to feel valued, supported and inspired. Whether you are 14 or 86, those fundamentals do not change.
Rosmini Hybrid Education Hub was built on that belief – sparked by Jacinda’s original idea and sustained by a shared commitment to doing things differently. One year in, it is clearer than ever that this is a belief worth holding onto.
